Tis the Season to Be Safe & Healthy
postedThe holiday season is in full swing! We’ve rounded up our top tips to help you and your family stay safe and healthy, no matter your celebration.
Protect yourself and others from colds, flu, and COVID
- Protect yourself from severe COVID and flu. Vaccines can offer protection from getting seriously sick and spreading illness to others. If you haven’t already, get your COVID and flu vaccines before heading to your holiday parties.
- Stay home if you’re sick. Take a peek at steps to take when you’re sick. Whether you’ve got a cold, the flu, or COVID, we can all agree no one wants to pass a virus while they’re passing the potatoes. So, before you go, consider your coworkers, friends, and neighbors—especially babies and older adults. If you’re under the weather and absolutely must leave home, be sure to mask up.
- Know before you go. Our respiratory illness dashboard can help you make informed decisions about your plans this holiday season. On the dashboard, you can find the latest trends showing how much COVID, flu, RSV, and other viruses are circulating in Dane County. We update the dashboard on Thursdays.
Prevent fires, burns, and holiday injuries
One of the least fun trips you can take is to the ER. Prevent spending the holidays in a hospital with these tips:
Prevent fires from seasonal items
- Follow Christmas tree safety tips. If you buy a real tree, make sure it’s fresh, water it daily, and make sure it’s not anywhere near your fire exit. The National Fire Protection Association has details on these tips and more.
- Use your menorah or kinara safely. The National Fire Protection Association recommends placing them on sturdy surfaces and in a location where they can’t be easily bumped or knocked over. Keep menorahs, kinaras, and all candles at least one foot away from anything that can burn. Be sure to blow out all candles when leaving the room or going to sleep.
Take extra care while cooking
These are great tips from the American Burn Association and our friends at the UW Health Burn Center:
- Stay in the kitchen: Whenever the oven is on or the stove is in use, someone should always be present. Unattended cooking is a leading cause of kitchen fires and burn injuries.
- Establish a 3-foot “kid- and pet-free safe zone” in the kitchen. Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills and burns.
- Never put water on grease fires. Keep a lid or baking soda nearby to smother small grease fires. Never use water on grease fires.
Keep tabs on recalls from your holiday gifts
One of our favorite email subscriptions is to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s list of recalls. Baby and kid products often make the list, so it’s a great weekly email to get, especially if you’ve got kiddos!
Don’t forget about food safety
- Cook food thoroughly: Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of food.
- Do not eat raw dough or batter: As tempting as it might be, dough and batter made with flour or eggs can contain harmful germs, like E. coli and Salmonella.
- Thaw turkey safely: The turkey has to thaw properly to prevent harmful germs from growing.
- Wash your hands: We know, we know, but we can’t NOT say it! Be sure to wash your hands often with soap and water before, during, and after preparing food.
Have a safe and healthy holiday season!
