Respiratory Illness Dashboard

Key Takeaways for the Week of 11/14

  • Are you experiencing cold symptoms? Could be rhinovirus (common cold), enterovirus, or parainfluenza. In the last month, all of these viruses have been detected at higher levels in lab tests done in Dane County.
  • School absences are higher than last week and overall remain elevated in comparison to the beginning of the school year (based on one school district in Dane County).
  • Visits to the emergency room for any respiratory illness have been increasing since September, the increases are especially big in people 17 and under. But we are still seeing low and stable levels of COVID, Flu, and RSV activity in our emergency department data.
  • Last week we highlighted an increase in walking pneumonia cases, caused by a bacteria called Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The people impacted by this virus has mainly been school aged kids and young people in Wisconsin and across the country. We don't have data on the dashboard for this illness, but you can learn more here.
