Fetal and Infant Mortality Review

We coordinate the Dane County Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR). FIMR works to find ways to prevent fetal and infant deaths. It is an evidence-based, community-level prevention strategy that helps maintain a sense of urgency, while also being a foundation for action. The goal is to improve the wellbeing of birthing people and families in Dane County.

Partnerships are critical for this work.

We bring together experts in maternal child health and members of the community. In 2023 we launched an initiative to compensate people with lived experience of fetal and infant loss to be a part of the FIMR case review team.

The case review process helps us identify places where we may prevent deaths.

We review cases of fetal and infant deaths to:

  • Look for factors associated with the fetal and infant deaths.
  • Establish if they represent systems-level problems or gaps that need change
  • Identify themes for actionable intervention areas
  • Advocate for community-informed solutions

We identify causes and work on solutions.

FIMR is focused on identifying why poor outcomes happened, to prevent future ones. For FIMR case review we prioritize Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) mortality cases. As a team, we discuss and identify possible themes that could have contributed to an infant loss, focusing on actionable changes that can be made in our community.
