When’s the last time you got yourself tested?

posted

It’s national “Get Yourself Tested” (GYT) Month, and we’re reminding everyone that we offer STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing and treatment at no cost for everyone! It’s a good idea to get tested if you’ve had a change of partners or haven’t been tested in the past year.

Many of our partner agencies are also providing free or low cost testing this month. Check out Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, or the University Health Services Sexual Health Clinic (for UW students).

STIs are common.

STIs impact young people the most. In the U.S., almost half (48%) of reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were among people 15–24 years old (CDC, 2023 data). Our clinics are an inclusive, confidential space to talk through any sexual health concerns.

All STIs—even HIV—are treatable & most are curable.

The sooner you get tested, the sooner you can take action to protect your health and the health of your partner(s). It’s also important to get treated so you don’t have more serious health complications later. In Wisconsin, the most common STI is chlamydia. If untreated, it can make it difficult or impossible for a person to get pregnant. Syphilis cases, including congenital cases, have been rising too. Babies can get syphilis infection from their mother at any stage in pregnancy and has serious effects.

STI tests are quick & simple.

We offer free, confidential testing and treatment for:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • HIV
  • Trichomonas: Testing is free for patients with vaginas and for patients with a penis who present with symptoms
  • Genital herpes: Testing is offered for symptomatic patients
