Early Detection Starts with Breast Cancer Screening
This October, Public Health Madison & Dane County is urging women not to skip or delay their recommended breast cancer screening.
“Screening can help detect breast cancer early, sometimes before any symptoms begin," said Dawn Henslee, Program Coordinator for Public Health's Well Woman Program. "When cancer is caught in its early stages, it is smaller and easier to treat. That's why we're urging women know the recommendations and make time for that appointment, because it just might save their life."
In Dane County alone, roughly 425 women receive a breast cancer diagnosis each year. Public Health works to make sure lack of access is not a barrier to getting screened. In 2025, Public Health enrolled 1,030 clients into the Wisconsin Well Woman Program (WWWP). The program connects eligible women with free breast exams, mammograms, and other diagnostic tests. Eligibility is based on insurance and income status.
"We can help you understand eligibility, answer your questions about breast cancer, and help you make an appointment for a free screening. If you don't know where to start, help is just a phone call or email away," said Henslee.
Women who learn they have breast cancer may also be eligible for Wisconsin Well Woman Medicaid, which covers treatment costs for breast cancer.
“Please talk with your friends and loved ones about the importance of regular screenings. A simple conversation can make a big difference, and Public Health is here to ensure that every woman in our community has access to the care they need," said Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.
“I encourage everyone in Dane County to talk with their health care provider about when screening is right for them and to take advantage of the resources available in our community. Cost or access to health care should never stand in the way of receiving potentially lifesaving care. I'm grateful to Public Health and our community partners for helping connect people with the screenings and support they need," said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard.
