Public Health Reminds Consumers of Contamination
Madison, WI, Monday, February 19, 2007 Despite the recent wide coverage of the peanut butter contamination, Public Health for Madison and Dane County would like to remind consumers to check their pantries to determine that any peanut butter that they have is safe or not. The peanut butter targeted by the alert is as follows: BRAND: Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter PRODUCT CODE: 2111 (found on the jar lid) These are the only types of peanut butter that might have been contaminated by Salmonella, a type of bacteria that causes foodborne illness that involves such symptoms as fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Both the Peter Pan and Great Value brands are manufactured in a single facility in Georgia by ConAgra. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected. According to the FDA "If consumers have this product, they should discard it, but save the product lid. For a full refund, consumers can return the Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter product lid along with their name and address to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103." Public Health staff advises any WIC participants that have purchased the recalled peanut butter with their WIC food instruments to follow the same instructions as other consumers.
