You Don't Have to Navigate Cancer Alone

posted

The Wisconsin Well Woman Program connects eligible women with free cervical cancer screenings, breast exams, mammograms, and other diagnostic tests. It also supports the Wisconsin Well Woman Medicaid program, which covers treatment costs for breast and cervical cancer. Our staff can answer questions about these cancers, program eligibility, and can help make an appointment.

This program has been helping thousands of women navigate cancer— from screening, to diagnosis, to treatment, and beyond— for 30 years. We heard from a few of those people about their experience. Keep reading to hear about it in their own words.

Sarah first learned about the Well Woman Program after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

“The Well Woman Program has been an absolute blessing on my healing journey. Their staff is extremely knowledgeable and responsive. They walked me through step-by-step what I needed to do to complete my application and answered all my questions about coverage.”

“Regular screenings are key. The more we can proactively participate in our healthcare, the better. I was so amazed to hear about the Well Woman Program. I hope more and more women can access it. It truly can save lives.”

Jo sought to help her sister who had just been diagnosed with metastasized breast cancer. That’s when she found the Well Woman Program.

“Well Woman Program staff was terrific in responding to my questions. She was clear about requirements and possibilities, which gave me hope. She worked hard to help us navigate, step-by-step.”

“I, and many women I know, at some point have an irregular mammogram. That means x-rays, ultrasounds, or even MRIs. There’s anxiety getting through that process and a blessing to hear good news. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend someone contact the Well Woman Program to help with this or at least get more information. It’s worth it to not go through weeks of fear and wondering.”

Zoe learned about the Well Woman Program during a routine gynecology visit at Planned Parenthood. She discovered she had a diagnosis that required regular screenings and didn’t have health insurance.

“The Well Woman Program helped arrange a mammogram through UW Health and unfortunately, I was diagnosed with cancer. The staff at Public Health were incredibly supportive at a time that was very scary both because I had no idea how serious the tumor was and because I had no insurance and only a part-time job.”

“Self-examinations are crucial to early detection. Screenings are also an important piece, but I think that self-exams and familiarity with one’s own body and the ability to recognize when something is off is even more important.”
