Infant & Young Child Safety

Suffocation is the leading cause of injury death for those under four years of age in Dane County. Suffocation includes choking, strangulation and smothering.

Safe Sleep Environment

  • PHMDC Perinatal nurses work with families to assure that babies are provided with a safe place to sleep and parents receive education on safe sleep practices.
  • PHMDC partners with the Madison Area Safe Kids Coalition and the American Family Children's Hospital Kohl's Safety Center on the Safe to Sleep Program and Dane County Safe Sleep Initiative.
  • Pregnancy Helpline Safe Sleep Program
    Pregnancy Helpline is committed to making sure all babies in the Madison area have a safe place to sleep. They deliver brand new pack-n-plays free of charge to clients' homes. Call their Helpline number to request a contract and to arrange for delivery: (608) 222-0008.
  • Society of St. Vincent de Paul
    2033 Fish Hatchery Road, Madison, WI 53713. Call (608) 442-7200, ext. 441, Monday through Friday, 9 am-3:30 pm for an interview. New portable cribs are made available to low-income Dane County households.

Recommendations for a Safe Infant Sleeping Environment, American Academy of Pediatrics

  • Place baby on back to sleep every time
  • Use a firm sleep surface
  • Room-sharing without bed-sharing is recommended
  • Keep soft objects and loose bedding out of the crib (no bumpers)
  • Pregnant women should receive regular prenatal care
  • Avoid smoke exposure during pregnancy and after birth
  • Avoid alcohol and illicit drug use during pregnancy and after birth
  • Breastfeeding is recommended
  • Consider offering a pacifier at nap time and bedtime
  • Avoid overheating
  • Infants should be immunized in accordance with recommendations of the AAP and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Avoid commercial devices marketed to reduce the risk of SIDS

Child Passenger Safety

The Safe Kids Madison Area Coalition hosts 4 free Child Passenger Safety Seat Checks each month across Dane county. The check will ensure that your car seat has not been recalled, the seat is adjusted properly to fit your child, and the seat fits securely in the vehicle.
