How to safely handle a syringe

  • Put on gloves. Do not touch the syringe with your hands.
  • Use pliers or tongs to pick up the syringe.
  • Bring the container to the syringe.
  • Cut the syringe immediately into a Sharps Disposal Container, or use a rigid plastic bottle like laundry detergent, not a soda bottle.
  • Place the syringe needle-first into the container. Clearly label the container with the words "bio-hazard" or "Sharps."
  • Remove your gloves, and wash your hands, or use alcohol gel to clean your hands as soon as possible.
  • Keep the Sharps Disposal Container in a secure location. This must be disposed of as biohazardous waste. Do not put in the trash.
